With a score line that included five bullets Italian Flavio Favini won the 2001 Melges 24 World Championship in true style after the final day of racing eventually had to be cancelled due to lack of wind.

Last night's protest by Brian Porter against Flavio Favini (helming for Franco Rossini) was lodged after the end of protest time and was dismissed by the jury. The results from race 8 stand and Favini leads the regatta by 7 points from Harry Melges (helming for Jeff Eckland).

The penultimate day of the 2001 Melges 24 World Championship brought an interesting mix of weather and sea conditions and some very exciting racing. Although the race committee had hope to complete 3 more races the dying, shifting breeze resulted in a wise decision to stop at two.

After the intense frustration of day one when a lack of wind meant no races were completed at all the Melges 24 fleet was raring to go for day two.

After a 3* hour postponement waiting for wind in Key West PRO Dave Brennan made the only sensible choice and sent the Melges 24 World Championship fleet home with no racing attempted on the opening day. "It was definitely the right move.
