The North Sea Regatta (www.nsr.nl) played host to the first Melges 24 event in the Netherlands. Some great sailors from other classes were invited to sail on one of the two demo boats of Hein Ruyten.
27 boats signed in for the German Open 2009 - finally 23 boats showed up at the starting line. The German Open were sailed in Prien at Lake Chiemsee from 29 May to 1 Juneand the event was hosted by Chiemsee Yacht Club (www.cyc-prien.de).
For the first time ever the Melges24 class sailed an Austrian Open. The Class association set up earlier this year prepared the event as good as possible in Cooperation with "Sailing Club Kammersee" (www.sck.at) at Lake Attersee from 22-24 May.
Please note that Notice Of Race Ammendment No 1 for the 2009 Melges 24 European Championship has now been published at the event web site. This change ammends the time of the first start for the practise races on Sunday 23rd August and the first day of racing on Monday 24th August to 1300.
A few years ago Norwegian sailors Stian Briseid and Marius Falch Orvin established an all amateur Melges 24 team with the goal of challenging for the Corinthian World Championship.
Most Melges 24 owners will have at some time considered sponsorship as a potential means of offsetting the cost of campaigning their boat on the regatta circuit. Indeed on the US and European circuits, hulls and sails displaying sponsors decals are a familiar site these days.
