US Nationals Get Underway in Jacksonville
From the USMCA - The coveted U.S. Melges 24 National Championship title is officially up for grabs. At the start of Wednesday, thirty-eight teams were on the roster and by the time registration concluded, more than forty-five entries were confirmed. Throughout the day, teams spent their efforts preparing the boats, tasking registration, making weigh-in and practice time was spent under very pleasant conditions — mostly sunny skies and warm tempatures.
The 2006 Championship is being hosted by the legendary Florida Yacht Club in Jacksonville, Florida. Historically, this venue is the scene for the famous King's Day Regatta/Atlantic Coast Championship and assuming the position of Regatta Chair is none other than Pat Lambert. Working closely alongside Pat is PRO Rick Preston. Together with the generous support of FYC, for more than a decade they have delivered what Melges 24 sailors demand — top-knotch, well-run, competitive races.
To no surprise the level of competition is astounding. The Melges 24 is a platform that reels in the best-of-the-best. Competing in this ultimate three day event is the likes of Wally Cross, Scott Nixon, Chris Larson, Chuck Allen, Max Skelley, Jamie Kimball, reigning Melges 24 North American Champion Brian Porter and Brian Bissell. Of the forty-seven teams on hand, four of England's top teams are participating including Stuart Simpson with Jamie Lea at the helm accompanied by Nigel Young and Yachts & Yachting's Justin Chisolm, and John Pollard for Torquay, UK with Rob Smith calling tactics.
Special attention is being given to the Corinthian division as well. More than a dozen teams are enrolled — a drastic change from last year where less than a tenth of the fleet was catagorized by ISAF as true Group 1 competitors. Corinthian recognition and prizes will be awarded each day as well as an overall on the final day of racing.
Day one is expected to kick-off on schedule, despite the overnight weather forecast of fierce storms with damaging winds. Thursday's gloomy morning is expected to clear out for sunny afternoon air with winds in the 20-30 mph range.
