TOM FREYTAG WINS AUDI MELGES 24 US GOLD CUP WITH RACE TO SPARE

Yesterday Tom Freytag won the Audi sponsored US Melges 24 Gold Cup with a race to spare just as he had the Melges 24 US Nationals only a few weeks ago. Having won the seventh race of the regatta Freytag was able to return to the dock and leave his rivals battling it out in the final race as he packed up early ready for the long drive back to Wisconsin.

Despite winning the final race of the series and coming third in race seven Brian Porter was unable to touch Freytag but was happy with his second place overall.

Overnight third placed Philippe Kahn and Mark Reynolds, who were sharing the helming duties aboard "Pegasus", had a disasterous race seven ending up 18th and their eighth place in the final race wasn't enough to make up for it and they found themselves slipping to fourth overall.

Seadon Wisjen on the other hand had a very consistent day scoring 2 and 3 to give him a comfortable third overall whilst Bruce Ayres took fifth.

The battle for sixth place was a close one and eventually went to countback with Argyle Campbell just pipping Shawn Bennett to the post.

Melges Performan Sailboat's Andy Burdick was delighted with how the event had gone. "We had an excellent regatta with simply the best venue. The racing is good and the scenery is even better. It's a fun place to sail and everyone should be here for the World Championship next year - it is one of the best Melges 24 venues ever!!!" commented Burdick during the regatta.
