Switzerland's Jorg Holz Wins Melges 24 Volvo Cup Lerici
With 36 boats from 9 nations the second leg of the 2012 Melges 24 Volvo Cup, held in Lerici, proved to be as challenging as ever. The skies were sunny and the temperature was up at 27° C but sadly the wind was very weak and as a result only three very light and shifty races could be completed. This was particularly frustrating for the sailors and in the days before the regatta as everone was preparing the wind was blowing at 20-30 knots.
Overall is was Switzerland's Jorg Holz sailing SUI821 Andele who just managed to grab overall victory from Flavio Favini aboard SUI825 Blu Moon. The pair were tied on points at the end of the regatta but Holz took the top step on the podium on on countback. Third place went to Matteo Balestrero sailing ITA693 Giogi. The Czech team of Fedor Kubes on CZE792 Marduk HL Sailing Team put in a good showing to take fourth place just ahead of class stalwart Jean-Marc Monnard in SUI599 Poizon Rouge.
In the overall standings after two events Matteo Balestrero now leads the series from Alessio Marinelli sailing ITA628 Pensavo Peggio with Jorg Holz third, Chris Rast, sailing SUI654 EFG Bank fourth and Geoff Carveth sailing GBR694 Gill Race Team fifth.
