Richard Reid Wins Melges 24 Guardians, Quantum Great Lakes Cup Event
August 28, 2023 - Grand Traverse, U.S.A. - It was an awesome weekend filled with great fun and lots of Melges 24 racing at the Grand Traverse Yacht Club for the Guardians of the Great Lakes Regatta (formerly the Grand Traverse Invite) on August 26-27. A field of 22 competitors lit up the waters of Grand Traverse Bay completing a total of 7 races.
Finishing no worse than third, Canada’s Richard Reid on Zingara edged out Eddie Cox’s Zenda Express and Cuyler Morris’ Dark Horse by three points to win the second event of the Quantum Great Lakes Cup Series (QGLC). Cox and Morris finished up the event equal in points, with Cox winning on countback after accumulating 4 bullets. Rounding out the top five was Dan Berezin’s Surprise and Steve Boho racing The 300.
With the conclusion of the Guardians of the Great Lakes Regatta, the U.S. Melges 24 fleet is now officially half way through the 2023 Quantum Great Lakes Cup Series racing season. Only two events remain on the calendar, the North American Championship on September 14-17 in Toronto, Canada, and the U.S. Nationals on October 6-8.

Taking over the QGLC series lead after two events with a five-point lead is Cuyler Morris’ Dark Horse. Fred Roselle’s Rustler and Dan Berezin’s Surprise are seated second and third respectively, yet tied in points. Mike Dow’s famous Flying Toaster now sits in fourth, followed by Steve Boho’s The 300!

2.) USA - Eddie Cox, Zenda Express; 1-3-1-2-1-1-9 = 18 pts.
3.) USA - Cuyler Morris, Dark Horse; 3-2-2-3-2-5-1 - 18 pts.
4.) CAN - Dan Berezin, Surprise; 4-7-7-4-5-7-10 = 44 pts.
5.) USA - Steve Boho, The 300; 12-5-8-5-6-9-4 = 49 pts.
