Melges 24 Worlds 2010 - Driving To Tallinn Now A Fast And Practical Alternative To The Ferry
For years driving across Eastern Europe was a logistical nightmare of bad roads, difficult boarder crossings and legal and customs pitfalls. Traditionally the only practical way to transport a Melges 24 from Western Europe in to Tallinn would have been by ferry. However, in recent years there have been massive improvements in the road system throughout the former Eastern Block Baltic region, the boarder crossings have opened up and countries that were once virtually impossible to drive through without complex visas and plenty of cash in your back pocket are now welcoming visitors with open arms.
With the European Melges 24 fleet preparing to head to Tallinn for the 2010 Melges 24 Worlds next summer the organisers decided it was time to find out whether the rumours of this amazing new road and border crossing system were true and so intrepid Finnish Class member Arto Kiiski took up the challenge and set off to drive from Germany right through to Tallinn. As it turned out the roads were even better than described and Arto made record time on a most pleasurable drive through some fascinating countryside. He even managed to spy out the perfect historic town for a mid trip break!
