Gill Race Team Took the Lead After the First Day of the MVM Melges 24 Spring Regatta, Pre-race of the Melges 24 Europeans 2014

Twelve boats including three foreign boats were on the starting line of the MVM Melges24 Spring Regatta, the pre-race of the Melges 24 European Championship 2014 on the Lake Balaton competition organized by the Sports Association of MVM on April 26-27.

Racing took place in 5-8 knots of steady wind with a little cloudiness in the morning, however in the afternoon the sailors could enjoy the real spring while the water of the lake was azure-coloured and was glimmering in the sun.

The first race was won by the team Nondimerai (HUN) led by Thomas Pomucz , second was FGF Sailing Team (HUN) with Rozsnyai Domokos in helm and followed by the British Gill Race Team with Geoff Carveth in helm.

After the start of the second race the boats started to struggle in the weakening wind and the Race Committee decided to shorten the race before the final downwind leg. Blue-black-white-coloured gennaker of the Estonian boat Lenny with Tonu Toniste’s team crossed the finish line first, the second and third positions were the same as in the first race taken by the FGF and the Gill Race Team.

After a short delay the Race Committee could start with the last race of the day. The wind with velocity of 5-6 knots was steady but gradually weakened by the end of the race. The British Gill Race Team was victorious again, this time followed by Akos Csolto’s Ponente (HUN) team, and Michael Schineis helmed Pure (AUT) .

After three races the top three boats were:
1. Gill Race Team (GBR694) - 7 pts
2. FGF Sailing Team (HUN 209) - 10 pts
3. Lenny (EST790) - 13 pts
