Berezin Wins Quantum Great Lakes Event #2, Sarnia Cup

23 June 2024 - Point Edward, Ontario, Canada -  The Sarnia Cup, a two-day regatta held on June 22-23 at the Sarnia Yacht Club in Point Edward, Ontario, Canada, was the second event in the four-part Quantum Melges 24 Great Lakes Cup Series. Seven races were completed.

The weather during the weekend was generally mild and typical for early summer. With comfortable temperatures in the mid-70s, Dan Berezin’s Surprise made a remarkable comeback on Sunday to overtake Saturday’s overnight leader, Mike Gozzard, at the helm of Rush. At the close of racing, the two were tied at the top with equal points with Berezin winning both the overall competition and the Corinthian division on countback.

Sunday saw slightly warmer temperatures with a mix of sun and clouds and a 10-15 knot breeze that ultimately played to Berezin’s advantage. With this win, he and his crew—his son Michael Berezin, Alex Kapustin, Denys Kalchenko, and Misha Mayevsky—move into the overall lead of the 2024 Quantum Melges 24 Great Lakes Cup Series.

Two events remain in the popular Midwest racing series: the Guardians of the Great Lakes in Traverse City on August 17-18, and the Fall Championship on beautiful Geneva Lake in early October.
