2020 Melges 24 European Sailing Series: Melges 24 Fleet Is Ready for an Exciting Finale of the Series in Barcolana City Trieste

October 1, 2020 - Trieste, Italy - It’s time to compete for the final points of the 2020 Melges 24 European Sailing Series for the international Melges 24 fleet, gathering in the city of legendary regatta Barcolana for the final stage of the European Sailing Series and penultimate Act of the Italian Melges24 Tour taking place this upcoming weekend on October 2-4. Regatta will be hosted by the Società Triestina Sport del Mare (STSM) in co-operation with the Italian Melges 24 Class and International Melges 24 Class Associations.

The President of the STSM Guido Benci is excited about the approaching event: “We are very pleased to welcome the Melges 24 class racers to the Società Triestina Sport del Mare for the first time here in Trieste, in the city of sailing, for the fourth and final stage of the 2020 Melges 24 European Sailing Series. Given the weather forecast to complete the nine races scheduled by the program, I hope that the competitors will appreciate the location in the city centre of Trieste and our young club. 19 teams have been registered, a result that I consider very good given the context and the current epidemiological situation. All necessary precautions against Covid-19 will be taken among athletes and organizers. A wet weekend is expected which could turn in a guarantee wind sustained from the South being able to entertain the crews.”

International Melges 24 Class Association (IM24CA) is very happy about being in Trieste finally. The vicinity to Portoroz, Slovenia, where Melges 24 international fleet has had one regatta of the series a year since 2014, has been helping to grow the Melges 24 fleet of Trieste Gulf. For that IM24CA would particularly like to thank Davide Rapotez, owner and helm of Destriero, for his enthusiasm and dedication to keep the Melges 24 spirit high and organize this event together with Società Triestina Sport del Mare, especially in difficult times which is a real credit to our sport of sailing and the Melges 24 Class.

Miles Quinton, Vice Chair Europe of IM24CA is delighted that in this challenging year IM24CA can announce the fourth and final event of the European Sailing Series 2020 in Trieste. “We have had fantastic sailing and fierce competition from Torbole, in Italy to Attersee, in Austria, Portoroz in Slovenia and now Trieste in Italy once more. There are 19 boats entered for the event from five nations–so a truly international fleet will compete to win this regatta. In the overall standings of the series Michael Tarabochia's White Room (GER), steered by Luis Tarabochia enters the event with a commanding lead after having competed in all the events, followed by a pack led by Miles Quinton's Gill Race Team (GBR) steered by Geoff CarvethArkanoe by Montura (ITA) by Sergio CaramelAtena by Jure Jerkovic (SLO) and Orca by Helmut Gottwald (AUT). With five nations competing for the overall and Corinthian podium this will prove an exciting finale to the series!”

Also two German teams - Jannes Wiedemann's Ace, currently sixth on the ranking, and Peter Karrie's Nefeli, seventh on the ranking and the winner of the Portoroz event, will be part of the battle for the higher positions.

The event will start after registration with Skippers’ Meeting at 11 am on Friday, October 2nd and with the first warning signal scheduled for 1 pm.

Since the regatta has been scheduled just one week before the legendary Barcolana regatta, then the participants can enjoy the great regatta atmosphere, what Trieste has to offer for the sailors in that period, also for the Melges 24 class in particular. Melges 24 teams are invited to participate at the Barcolana One Design regatta and Barcolana By Night on Saturday, October 10 and then on Sunday, October 11 at the real 52nd Barcolana which in its record year in 2019 attracted 2,689 boats and over 16,000 sailors to the starting line – a great show not to miss!
