Today's Melges 24 Worlds action on Lake Garda was fast, furious and fantastic fun.  With six races now complete the discard came into play and the Gold and Silver fleets were decided.  Up to six more races are scheduled so the battle continues to rage as the teams attempt to gain any advantage they can whilst avoiding potentially very costly mistakes.

After yesterday's storms, today Torbole welcomed the Melges 24 World Championship fleet in style, first with a strong  Peler wind from the north and later in the day with the famous Ora from the south, allowing the Race Committee to run two further races for the four qualification groups sailing in two fleets.

2012 Melges 24 Worlds - Day 2 - No Wind, No Race

The second day of the Melges 24 Worlds brought plenty of sun tanning, but very sadly no racing, as a most unusual weather system meant that Torbole was not able to deliver her legendary Ora wind today.  The Race Committees on the two race courses both made several attempts to start racing, but the wind refused to cooperate forcing them to hoist the AP flag and wait for a wind that never came.

First Day Surprises At 2012 Melges 24 World Championship In Torbole

On two race courses, one in front of Torbole and one further south, located just north of Limone, the Melges 24 World Championship came under starters orders with the evergreen Melges 24s divided into four groups, identified by four colors.

More than 125 crews, from 22 nations, were in the water waiting for the much-anticipated start. During the first two races on the north course the orange group sailed against the blue group, while on the south the challenge was between the white and black groups.

San Francisco Yacht Club and the San Francisco Melges 24 Fleet are preparing for an influx of Melges 24 teams from around the Globe as they ready themselves for the 2012 Melges 24 North American Championship, which takes place from 22-26 August.
