Scheduled for Zenda, Wisconsin - Home of the Melges 24 September 13-15, 2001 The Melges 24 Class and Melges Performance Sailboats have announced that the 2001 Melges 24 Gold Cup Championship will be held in Zenda, Wisconsin September 13-15, 2001. "We are bringing the class home to its roots".
With great sadness we have to inform you that 43 year old Giorgio Zuccoli passed the finishing line on the night of 27 March 2001. For once there were no cheers only tears from his family and many friends across the world who feel the pain of having lost a person whom we all loved and respected.
The final day of racing for the Melges 24 Class at the Acura SORC was held in glorious sunshine and 16-18 knots of onshore breeze which kicked up the classic Miami chop.
Day two of the Acura SORC 2001 brought near perfect conditions for races 3 and 4 in the Melges 24 Class. Racing got underway at lunchtime in 6-10 knots on flat water. The first start was heavily port biased resulting in a major log-jam at the port end and a general recall.
As darkness fell over Miami last night the 27 strong Melges 24 fleet finally made it back to the dock after the first two races in the 60th Acura SORC. The day started with a 3 hour postponement waiting for breeze which eventually began to fill in mid afternoon.
26 top Melges 24 teams including Harry Melges, Brian Porter and Morgan Reeser will be doing battle for the honours at the ACURA SORC Regatta 2001 commencing 1 March.
