FINAL DAY - THE MELGES 24 FLEET AT KEY WEST RACE WEEK 2001 CONGRATULATIONS ZENDA EXPRESS!

The final day of Yachting Key West Race Week did not bring the hoped for increase in breeze but there was a change in the wind which swung round to the South East for the first time and came in at a steady 10-12 knots.

Conditions today were very trying on the Melges 24 course as we were racing in 5-10 knots with a lot of chop. Many times the crew was inside the boat while pounding through large swell.

Another light airs day at Yachting Key West Race Week saw Morgan Reeser consolidate his overall lead after the fifth Melges 24 race.

The race was lead from the first mark by Tony Wattson, who made a brilliant first beat then successfully defended his position right round the course. The only person near Wattson at the first mark was Argyle Campbell who chased hard all the way round the course but was never quite able to make up the ground.

An overcast sky, showers and light, variable conditions couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the Melges 24 Class at Yachting Key West Race Week today.

Race one kicked off in around 14 knots north-east, but shortly after the start a shower front came through dropping the breeze back to under 10 knots. The left hand side of the beat paid and again Karen Gottwald showed amazing form to lead the fleet into the first windward mark and finish 4th.

“The key to our day was that we got out there as soon as we could and sailed up wind a bit and got tuned up for the conditions. It was a light to medium breeze but relatively flat water so not too difficult to keep the boat moving. We just tried to be conservative as the courses were relatively long and I think it was key not to get hung out on one side or the other and to fight for your lanes in the middle, play the compass and watch our positioning on other boats around us.
