About Menno Meyer
Menno Meyer completed a gold and silversmith training at the Vocational School Schoonhoven and a design course at the Hochschule Pforzheim in Pforzheim, Germany.
Meyer was the seventh generation of metal designers in his Rotterdam family. His father Henk Meijer mainly worked with bronze and alpaca and had a studio with nine employees on the Turfmarkt in Gouda, the Netherlands.
The versatile visual artist Meyer, who has worked in Gouda since 1960, was successful as a modern goldsmith, but he also made objects in stainless steel and bronze for public spaces and businesses, among ‘others.[2] He exhibited regularly at home and abroad. Meyer created a work of art for the new office of the then Unichema in Gouda, the former candle factory, subsequently part of Croda International and, since July 2022, part of Cargill, which opened in 1989 (see: image). The sphere symbolises the global, the arc the incoming orders and the arc with the tentacles the international contacts.[3]
A gifted sailor and part of the preselection for the Dutch sailing team for the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico, Meyer also won many prizes for water sports events.
Since 1973, Meyer has had his studio at a historic place in Gouda, the so-called "Tapijthuis." There, the first castle, a motte of the Van der Goude gentlemen, stood directly on the old canal around the castle, which was built before 1300.
In 2019, Meyer started making objects from recycled materials such as steel. These objects were displayed at Meyer's Exhibition More is Less in December 2019 at the Art Foundation Firma Van Drie in Gouda.
Meyer died on September 30, 2022 in his sleep at 92.
Meyer designed various prizes and trophies, such as The Coornhert medal for the presentation of the Coornhert Prize from 1990 to 1998
The Schout&Schepenen Bokaal for a sailing race of mayors and aldermen in the southern delta area
The Solo Challenge award for solo sailors
The stainless steel plaque for sailors in the Falcon class
The Kunstmomenttrophy in Gouda
Awards:
Gold medal in Munich
The Gulden Form (2x) in Utrecht
