Michael Schineis Wins Austrian Open Championship
Nine Melges 24s made the start line for the Austrian Championship hosted by the SCK on Lake Attersee over the weekend of 30 May to 1 June. They found great wind and great waves although not as much sunshine as they would have liked.
Day one produced a WSW wind of 8-15 knots and although conditions were a little chilly on the lake the committee was able to lay on three very nice races. Day two brought increasing winds with gusts up to 30 knots at times. There was plenty of drama and more than a few broaches plus one bowman overboard (rapdily retrieved) on day three and this time four races were completed. Afterwards the sailors enjoyed a great meal together and plenty of drinks which helped to warm everyone up again. The final day was lighter at 7-9 knots and thre more races were completed in plenty of time for the lunchtime awards ceremony.
In first place was ITA 715, Michael Schineis, Daniele Cassinari, Jaun Wickl, Simona Höllermann and Philip Schineis with a score of (4), 2, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1. They were simply the best.
Second was ENG 731, Markus Wieser, Yevgeny Braslavets, Markus Steinlein, Vanessa Wieser and Jonas Vogt with a score of 1, 1, 1, (3), 2, 3, 3, 2
In third place came AUT 681, Franz Urlesberger, Willibald Hauer, Christoph Tittes Udo Mose and John Bayer, counting 2, 8, 2, 2, 3, 1, 2, (10DNF)
Congratulations to the winners and all participants.
Gert Schmidleitner as race director has once again proved that he is one of the best. He did not hesitate to get the course established and racing underway and everything ran perfectly. Thanks Blondl, you have ensured satisfied sailors.
Thank you to all who attended on the water and on land for a smooth running of the event. And compliments to the Melges sailors. They are very good starters. There was only a single recall, despite strong winds. All other races went smoothly.
