Jesper Bendix Claims Inaugural Melges 24 Danish National Championship
During the past weekend the first official Melges 24 Danish Championship took place in Hellerup near Copenhagen. The event had participation of 28 boats covering most of Denmark as well as participants from Norway, Sweden and Germany.
Four races were sailed during Saturday in a light shifty breeze giving the race committee and the competitors a hard time. Hellerup Sejlklub organized the event very well with help from good sponsors who made it possible to provide the sailors with good food and free sodas and beers, which had a very positive effect on the socializing after the races.
Unfortunately Saturday was the only day with races during this first ever Danish championship as the Danish summer really kicked in with high pressure on Sunday which resulted in no wind and lots of hours waiting on the water.
The results of the Danish championship showed that the strength of the Danish Melges 24 class is really increasing as the Danes occupied the first 5 places in the event. Winner and now Danish Champions was DEN 634 helmed by Jesper Bendix, followed by DEN 782 Kim Christensen and last on the podium was DEN 823 helmed by Danish Olympian sailor in the Star Class Michael Hestbaek.
